Foot massage is an ancient technique. It originated in China over 5000yrs ago and was also practiced in Ancient Egypt. In 1915, Dr William H. Fitzgerald a US specialist in E.N.T., introduced the concept of “zone therapy”. US physiotherapist Eunice Ingham took the concept further in the 1930’s developing the “Ingham Reflex Method of Compression Massage”.
Using a “map” of the feet and hands to show the appropriate pressure points that correspond to those parts of the body, Ingham mapped out the reflex points, and developed techniques for stimulation. Uric acid and calcium deposits that feel like sand, accumulate around specific reflex points. The therapist tries to break down and free these deposits. This opens blocked nerve pathways and improves the blood supply to flush away these toxins. There are 7200 nerve endings in each foot and doctors acknowledge the ability of reflexology to aid in the accumulation of the body's toxins.
